From the very beginning, the founders of the OCAD Student Press saw a great deal of potential in the amount of interesting and relevant design research being done in this institution. Every year OCAD students produce amazing projects that unfortunately, for the most part, fail to be recorded or archived in any tangible format. After watching this trend repeated throughout the years, it became clear that this work and research needed to be showcased and archived in the form of an annual publication. This publication would eventually become what is known today as the Shift series.

Through this ongoing annual publication, the OCAD Student Press is now on a mission to tap into the art and design-based thinking being explored everyday at our institution. What began first as a collaborative collection of Environmental Design and Industrial Design thesis work eventually opened up to students from all design disciplines. Today we are an integral part of the Ontario College of Art & Design with our publications now being widely read both within and outside of the school. Our publications are written, directed and designed by students, for students, with the support of students, and this is how we like it.

The mission of the OCAD Student Press is simple: get good ideas out of OCAD.

10.22.09
The OCAD Student Press is pleased to announce that we have just released the third installment of our Shift series entitled Shift:Approaches. It is our most comprehensive publication thus far, featuring work from all design disciplines at OCAD and it’s on sale now at the OCAD Bookstore (Rm 317C in 100 McCaul St).

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, we are now looking for new contributors for next year’s Shift publication. For the most part, our publications focus on 4th year design thesis work because these students are already well invested in an interesting and unique design idea and have research and process to bring to the table. But this isn’t to say that we do not accept 3rd year submissions. In fact, some of our most interesting contributions over the past three years have been from non-thesis students.

When it comes down to it, we are simply looking for passionate, committed and driven students to contribute essays that explore new and interesting approaches to design. We have never imposed a theme upon our publications because part of our goal at the OCAD Student Press is to showcase how diverse the world of design truly is and how elastic our processes can (and should) be.

Because we know how hard it is to accommodate everyone’s schedules we will be holding meetings at the OCAD Learning Zone (113 McCaul St, to the right of Wiki Hut as you enter from McCaul) at 7pm from Monday to Thursday next week (October 26th to 29th, 2009). Please drop by on any of those days to learn more about contributing to the next Shift publication.

Thanks for your time and we look forward to seeing you next week.

We are pleased to announce the release of our latest publication, Shift:Approaches, edited by Gordon S. Grice, designed by OCAD graphic design graduate Mike Dudek and with a foreword written by Mark Kingwell. We could not be more pleased with how it turned out.

It is now being read widely by both students and instructors at the Ontario College of Art & Design and is also available at Swipe Books on Advertising and Design in 401 Richmond, just east of Spadina Ave.

Introduction

In the Environmental Design (ED) program at OCAD we spent the last semester of our third year in a thesis preparation course. In this course, we go through a huge number of exercises to figure out what we're going to spend the next year working on. These exercises range from collages to poetry to inspirational maxims and thesis statements. Finally, we gather up our scraps of paper, edited documents and bubble diagrams, scan them, print them and test the taut boundaries or our graphic design knowledge by making the pages into a 45-odd-page "book".

The industrial Design (ID) student go through a similar process, researching and compiling the information and sources that will serve as the groundwork for their thesis explorations in the fall. We in ED look at their neatly labeled and organized binders with interest and a touch of envy, curious to see what such diligent investigation will grow into.

The essays you are about to read are explorations of the contents of our respective thesis books and binders, before they become thesis projects. We trust that their scop and idealism will speak to our mission, which is to showcase the broad research subjects we engage with daily, as design students. We hope further that the Shift series, of which this book is the first, will evolve into a resource not just for the students at OCAD but for students and designers everywhere.

Introduction

When we began the process of producing this addition to the Shift series, we asked that our contributors write about a design issue they were passionate about. In most cases, these topics reflected the research conducted by students in their thesis year. For OCAD students, the thesis project is often a last chance to extensively explore a topic in undergraduate academia. It is interesting to note that the chosen topics gave us insight into the particular areas young designers are choosing to focus their efforts. For us this was almost as interesting as the essays themselves. Based on the following essays, it is clear that design students continue to stretch the constraints of their fields—often choosing to work at the intersection of disciplines

From Kenya to Nunavut, refugee camps to Facebook, stained glass to data visualization, the selection of topics covered in the book is eclectic. The writers come from all corners of the design faculty: Industrial, Environmental, Graphic and Advertising. Their varied approaches provide interesting design solutions and ask pertinent questions.

The mission of the OCAD Student Press is simple: get good ideas out of OCAD. We hope this collection does just that.

Introduction

Three years ago, two Environmental Design students founded the OCAD Student Press with the intention of publishing OCAD design thesis research that normally never saw the light of day. It began as a humble collaboration between Environmental Design and Industrial Design, but today has grown to include work from all design streams at OCAD. Every year, we have asked the same thing of our contributors: Show us what you are passionate about in design. There is no imposed theme or categorical limitation, and every year we find ourselves amazed by the eclectic mixture of submissions we receive. This year’s edition is no exception.

More than anything, this book should act as a tool for students and up-and-coming designers to better understand how truly vast the design world has become and how elastic our process can (and should) be. From all corners of design at OCAD, the pages that follow represent a cross section of the research and work being done by some of our most talented and engaging students. Design is a global conversation that is constantly changing, and we hope that this and all future publications will continue to add to that conversation in a way that is always critical, relevant, and genuinely positive.

Welcome to Shift:Approaches, the third installment of the Shift series.
